The Brain Injury Association of America Announces New Board Chair Joseph C. Richert, long-time Board member, appointed to national leadership position
Vienna, Va., February 6, 2008—The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), the nation’s oldest and largest brain injury patient advocacy organization that is the voice of help and hope for individuals with brain injury and their families, is pleased to announce the appointment of Joseph C. Richert to serve as Chairman of the Board for the 2008 calendar year. The Chairman’s term is one year with the option of renewal. Richert is president and CEO of Special Tree Rehabilitation System, headquartered in Romulus, Mich. Special Tree is a state-wide neuro- rehabilitation organization dedicated to the care of survivors of traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and multiple trauma. Under Richert’s leadership, Special Tree is well known for its innovative approaches to rehabilitation at all levels to help its clients regain their maximum level of functioning so they can find new ways to enjoy life post-injury. In addition to his responsibilities as president and CEO, Richert is a certified facilitator of the Franklin-Covey 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Leadership Training. “As Chair-elect since 2005, I’ve been working with the Board and with outgoing Chairman, Dr. Mark Ashley,” said Richert. “Mark was a strong leader of BIAA and I look forward to picking up where he left off by continuing to lead BIAA and our 48 state affiliates as we address the many challenges faced by brain injury survivors and those who care for them.” Richert has a long history of involvement with the Brain Injury Association of America. He has served on the Board of Directors since 2003 and was a member of the National Dispute Resolution Committee from 1998-2000. Richert also was honored with the State Leadership Award of Excellence at the 2001 State Association Assembly. “Joe’s many leadership strengths will be an asset to the Brain Injury Association of America,” said Susan Connors, president and CEO of BIAA. “Now that TBI is part of the national lexicon, Joe’s ability to build consensus and to envision the future will help solidify BIAA’s presence as a resource for survivors of brain injury and their families, and as a strong advocate for TBI survivors, especially our service members, on Capitol Hill.” About the Brain Injury Association of America Founded in 1980, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is the leading national organization serving and representing individuals, families and professionals who are touched by a life-altering, often devastating, traumatic brain injury (TBI).
