Progesterone as a treatment for brain injury
Progesterone as a treatment for brain injury continues to move
forward in trials. The Washington Business Journal reports
(11/20/2009) that BHR Pharma will apply to the FDA for permission to
begin clinical trials with Progesterone for brain injury. This on
top of nationwide trials already planned by Emory University.
“There’s nothing out there like this,” said Dr. Gregory O’Shanick,
national medical director of the Brain Injury Association of America
in Vienna. “That’s the issue. There have been hundreds of studies of
different chemical compounds over the last 25 years to see if
there’s some way to reduce the secondary cell damage in this
fashion. ... The bottom line is, nothing’s really worked.”
The discoverer of Progesterone as a potential treatment for brain
injury, Emory emergency medicine professor Don Stein, was a keynote
speaker at the 2009 Brain Injury Association of Iowa Annual
Conference. For more information
