Training for Community Organizations

The RI Department of Human Services contracted with the Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island to develop brain injury training for community organizations such as, social clubs, special interest or civic groups, and places of worship. Studies have shown that recovery and adjustment are enhanced when individuals return to community participation as soon as possible. Active participation as a valued member of a community group can have a positive impact throughout the recovery process. For those who will not enjoy a full recovery, the adjustment process is made easier when they do get involved in community and have contact with a large circle of support.

The video entitled Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury: Welcoming the Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor Back into Your Community Group provides basic education on the causes and consequences of traumatic brain injury, overview of common areas of difficulty including practical approaches and techniques to support participation in social and community activities, followed by interview input from individuals with brain injury and family members.

The RI Brain Injury Resource Center is able to provide these trainings to any community group or organization in Rhode Island free of charge at your site. For further information or to schedule training contact Elizabeth Connallon, our TBI Project Coordinator at 401-461-6599

Funding for the video training project was provided by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Administration Department of Health and Human Services Grant project # H21MC00057-01.
