BIAA Announces 2011 Award Recipients

13-Sep-2011 BIAA is thrilled to announce the recipients of its two distinguished national awards. Dr. Nathan D. Zasler, CEO and medical director of Tree of Life, a living assistance and transitional rehabilitation program for persons with acquired brain injury, has received the 2011 Sheldon Berrol M.D. Clinical Service Award, which recognizes the individual who, through a long service career, has made outstanding contributions to improving the quality of care, professional training and/or education in the field of brain injury.  Dr. Zasler is known for his focus on quality of life issues for the individual and family. Dr. Zasler is invited by colleagues across the world to present at conferences where he shares his current and innovative thinking about treatment issues.  As a clinician, Dr. Zasler has extraordinary skills, a no-nonsense approach, and a great sense of humor, all of which make his patients, their families, and his staff, feel great affection for him.

Dr. Flora Hammond, chief of Medical Affairs, Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, has been awarded the 2011 William Fields Caveness Award, which recognizes the individual who, through research on both a national and international level, has made outstanding contributions to bettering the lives of people who have sustained brain injury.  Dr. Hammond has been described as “one of the most – perhaps THE most – productive clinical translational researchers in brain injury rehabilitation working today.” She has studied the factors that affect and predict outcome after brain injury, and questioned the accuracy of outcome predictions widely handed out with confidence and affecting treatment decisions in the first months following brain injury.

Both awards will be presented at the ACRM/ASNR annual conference in Atlanta, October 11-15, 2011.
