Disorders of Consciousness Guideline Under Development

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) seeks comments to be used in developing new guideline recommendations for treating disorders of consciousness, such as vegetative state. Please review the topics the Academy plans to include in its guideline by leaving a comment on AAN's website.

The Academy requests public comments on the following issues:
-How often specific disorders of consciousness, death, severe/moderate disability, or good outcome will result
-Whether they are likely to regain consciousness (“wake up”) earlier than others
-Whether having certain favorable (helpful) characteristics, such as female gender, younger age at injury, shorter length of time since injury or undergoing repeated exams and tests help identify those who will regain consciousness and certain levels of functioning
-Whether certain treatments such as prescription drugs, food supplements, brain stimulation, oxygen therapy or sensory/environmental stimulation tests improve the condition

AAN is seeking public comments as part of the development process of this guideline. This new process is in response to standards from the Institute of Medicine.

The comment period closes October 5, 2012.
