Dr. Mark Ashley is Named Chairman Emeritus

Mark J. Ashley, ScD, CCC-SLP, CCM, CBIS, was named chairman emeritus of the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) by unanimous vote of the board of directors on Dec. 3, 2010, in Dearborn, Mich., in recognition of his extraordinary vision, leadership and dedication.

Dr. Ashley, co-founder and president/CEO of the Centre for Neuro Skills® in Bakersfield, Calif., served BIAA from 2002 to 2010 in progressively more responsible volunteer leadership positions helping to expand the association’s awareness, education and clinical certification programs and secure federal legislative victories such as reauthorization of the Traumatic Brain Injury Act, better access to care for military personnel and Veterans and inclusion of rehabilitation as a covered service in the essential benefits package of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. Dr. Ashley is also credited with shepherding the association’s financial stability and organizational growth during his volunteer tenure.

“Mark selflessly invests his time, talent and treasure to improve the quality of life for the 2.5 million individuals who acquire life-altering, often devastating, brain injuries in the U.S. each year,” said BIAA Chairman Joseph C. Richert. “He truly deserves this recognition.”

As chairman emeritus, Dr. Ashley will maintain an ex-officio seat on BIAA’s board of directors and will continue to lead several key committees, notably those relating to advocacy and professional education. “His commitment to the association and the people we serve is unsurpassed. We just couldn’t let him go,” remarked Susan H. Connors, BIAA president/CEO.

In 2007, Dr. Ashley received the Founders’ Award, BIAA’s highest honor for volunteer service. He is the author of numerous position papers, peer-reviewed articles and textbooks, including Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation, now in its third edition. He is a sought-after national speaker and frequent guest lecturer for universities, hospitals and other institutions.
