Landmark Concussion Legislation Signed in DC and Illinois

29-Jul-2011 Landmark concussion legislation was signed into law in both Washington, DC, and Illinois this week. DC Mayor Vincent Gray, with Amit Malhotra of the Brain Injury Association of D.C. in attendance, signed what is being called the most comprehensive youth concussion law of its kind in the country. The "Athletic Concussion Protection Act of 2011" applies to all athletes under the age of 18 and bars recently injured players from participating in practices or games until they receive written clearance from a physician to return. With the Chicago Bears playing field in the background, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed an important concussion bill into law yesterday at Soldier Field. This law will require that youth athletes be pulled from practice/game situations if they are found to be displaying signs/symptoms of a concussion. The player will not be able to return to play until they have been evaluated by trained medical personnel. Read more here.
