The New York personal injury law firm of De Caro & Kaplen, LLP was founded in 1982 by Shana De Caro and Michael Kaplen. Soon after forming their law practice, they discovered their special skills in representing persons who have sustained brain damage injuries. They have earned a distinguished reputation for their knowledge and experience as New York personal injury attorneys with an emphasis on traumatic brain injury, both within New York and nationally.

Michael Kaplen is a Professorial Lecturer in Law at the George Washington University Law School teaching the only course in traumatic brain injury law in the United States. He is the immediate past chair of the New York State Traumatic Brain Injury Services Coordinating Council (2008-2013). He is past president of the Brain Injury Association of New York State (1989-2008) and past chair of the American Association for Justice, Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group.

Mr. Kaplen is Board Certified as a Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and Board Certified in Professional Liability-Medical Malpractice by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys and has been named a New York Super Lawyer for the past nine years and one of the top 100 trial lawyers in New York State by the American Association of Trial Lawyers.

Shana De Caro is the Chair-Elect of the Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group of the American Association for Justice. She is Vice President of the American Academy of Brain Injury Attorneys and previously served as the Secretary and Treasurer of the American Association for Justice, Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group. She is the Secretary and a trustee of the Civil Justice Foundation, Board of Trustees. She is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, Trial Lawyer Honorary Society. Ms. De Caro serves as a member of the Advisory Board, Acquired Brain Injury Program of The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development. She serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers and on the Board of Advisors of the Interstate Bus Litigation Group of the American Association for Justice. She is an elected Fellow of the Melvin Belli Society.

Shana De Caro and Michael Kaplen are contributing authors to the New York Law Journal, where they write the column on traumatic brain injury. The two have authored the chapter on legal issues following brain damage injuries for the world renowned medical publication, Psychiatric Clinics of North America. They have lectured at the grand rounds at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, on medical malpractice in hospital emergency departments.
