Acquired brain injuries are a leading cause of long-term disability. Some of the most common, persistent and disabling consequences of brain injury are deficits in higher order cognitive functions that direct other, more basic processes based on an individual’s goals. Although being able to improve these functions could have far reaching benefits, chronic disability remains poorly addressed by current care. The overall goal of our research program has been to develop interventions for improving goal-directed functioning for individuals with brain injury.  We have been working to develop interventions to train and improve cognitive functioning, including developing protocols and tools that will be useful in supporting experimental studies of learning and plasticity. We have been working to develop functional brain imaging biomarkers that are informative of neural processes that underlie cognition and plasticity in cognition. By combining training and neurophysiology methodologies, our studies aim to elucidate the neural bases of improvements in cognitive functioning and thus support the discovery of new targets for intervention.
