With a nationwide network of state affiliates and local chapters, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) serves as the voice of brain injury for survivors, their families, and the professionals who provide care, treatment, and expertise to the brain injury community.

BIAA Works Relentlessly to:

BIAA’s Core Services Include:

National Brain Injury Information Center (NBIIC)

Operating nationwide in collaboration with the state affiliates, NBIIC assists thousands of individuals and families who experience the life-changing effects of brain injury. Compassionate and knowledgeable brain injury specialists assist in locating medical, rehabilitative, legal, financial, and other local support services critical to maximizing recovery.

Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS)

ACBIS is a voluntary training and credentialing program for clinicians and direct support personnel who specialize in brain injury. Since the program’s inception, the Association has certified more than 20,000 professionals, improving the quality of care for individuals with brain injury.


Scientific research is essential to developing prevention strategies, better treatments, and cures for people living with brain injury. BIAA awards grants annually, providing seed money for research projects and funding for dissertation grants, directing support to the best and brightest investigators.

Affiliate Services

BIAA provides leadership, technical assistance, operational best practices, and individualized fundraising training and consultation to a nationwide network of chartered state affiliates, divisions, and local chapters across the country.

Public Awareness

BIAA leads the nation in recognizing March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. BIAA’s award-winning website, social media, and print publications are essential parts of its outreach and education. Survivors, caregivers, and professionals also learn through on-demand and live webinars on a range of topics.


By influencing public policy at the US federal level, BIAA has secured millions of dollars for research, public awareness, and prevention. Key accomplishments include the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model Systems of Care, supporting the TBI Act and its subsequent reauthorizations over the last 20 years, creating the bipartisan Congressional Brain Injury Task Force, adding provision for service members with TBI in the National Defense Authorization Act, and including rehabilitation as an essential health benefit in Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. BIAA resources also support advocacy for state policy and funding priorities.

President/CEO Position

The Brain Injury Association of America seeks an experienced and visionary leader who is passionate about BIAA’s mission to improve the quality of life for all people affected by brain injury. This individual will provide strategic direction to the organization, drive fundraising and revenue generation, and manage and expand key stakeholder relationships and partnerships. The new President/CEO will lead BIAA to maximize impact by advancing policy, improving practice, elevating the voices of those impacted by brain injury and strengthening the field amidst a changing external environment.

The President/CEO will strengthen BIAA’s ability to raise awareness and funds in support of their work. This individual’s leadership and management will be results-oriented and focused on measurable outcomes and impact. They will steward and nurture an organizational culture with teamwork, collaboration, and innovation while also encouraging diversity. The President/CEO will develop and execute the future vision and strategic objectives for the organization, with an unwavering commitment to being a trusted, inclusive, and non-partisan voice and resource for the brain injury community, policymakers, medical professionals, and the public – so that everyone in the U.S. who sustains a brain injury is diagnosed, treated, and accepted


The President/CEO will be responsible for:

Executive Leadership and Management

  • Provide dynamic strategic vision and leadership for BIAA in service of its mission, with a focus on development and allocation of resources to achieve ambitious and specific goals
  • Serve as a strong external and internal leader for BIAA, by effectively communicating the organization’s mission and vision to a broad array of stakeholders including brain injury survivors, their families, medical professionals, government officials and policy makers, and partners
  • Inspire, motivate, and foster collaboration among BIAA’s dedicated staff
  • In collaboration with the COO, oversee the organizational infrastructure, policies, processes, and internal operations, to ensure a high-performing organization positioned for growth and sustainability

Fundraising and Revenue Generation

  • In collaboration with the development team, pursue innovative streams of income and partnerships to diversify revenue and ensure that there are resources to support sustainability, expansion, and innovation of programs
  • Engage with the Board of Directors and inspire them to utilize their skills to help achieve BIAA’s financial and strategic goals
  • Use sound judgment and analytical skills in managing and allocating resources

Governance and Finance

  • Communicate regularly with the Board of Directors about the execution of mission and strategy
  • Assess the financial status of the organization and work closely with the Board and CDO to chart a plan for continued financial sustainability and growth
  • In collaboration with the COO, support the preparation of the annual budget and financial reporting to Board, affiliates, and governmental agencies as needed
  • Set financial priorities and planning to ensure that BIAA is operating in a manner that supports the needs of the organization, its programs, and staff
  • Develop long and short-range financial plans, monitor the budget and ensure that sound financial controls are in place

Communications and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead as a sought-after spokesperson and seek out and create impactful opportunities to speak as a thought leader on issues related to brain injury
  • Work closely with volunteer leaders, committees, and staff to research, formulate, and communicate the organization’s public policy positions and goals in a way that galvanizes support for BIAA’s mission
  • Enhance existing, and build new, strong relationships with affiliates, chapters, government agencies, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, brain injury provider organizations, and other strategic partners
  • Meet regularly and convene with member affiliates, chapters, partner advocacy organizations, policy makers, and other key stakeholders to gather and share brain injury related resources and information to advance BIAA’s strategic priorities
  • Lead the development and implementation of BIAA’s public-awareness and public-information campaigns and projects
  • Raise awareness about BIAA’s mission and work and inspire the brain injury community and other stakeholders to engage with the organization


Candidates should have at least 15 years of progressive leadership and management experience within a mission-driven organization or association. In addition, qualified candidates will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree (required); a relevant Master’s degree is preferred
  • Experience working within the field of brain injury or personal experience and knowledge of the impact of brain injury is preferred
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors, preferably as a chief executive
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and disability issues, and legislative and regulatory processes at federal and state levels
  • Record of leading organizations through strategic planning processes, as well as transmitting and executing upon a clear vision to meet organizational priorities and milestones
  • Proven success leading fund development and revenue generation through oversight of fundraising initiatives, direct requests of corporate and individual donors, involvement with federal grants, and other initiatives.
  • Familiarity with membership, chapter relations, human resources, and related nonprofit operations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to establish a leading voice on advocacy issues
  • Strong commitment to the professional development of staff; successful track record of building, developing, and leading successful and high-performing teams
  • Excellent diplomacy, mediating and facilitation skills
  • Ability to lead teams and work effectively in a remote environment
  • Ability and willingness to travel to DC regularly to engage in advocacy efforts.
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationwide, when necessary, to participate in meetings and conferences as BIAA representative
