November is National Family Caregiver Awareness Month

04-Nov-2014

The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is recognizing the month of November as National Family Caregivers Awareness Month, a time when we recognize those who care for a loved one at home. More than 60 million people in the United States provide at-home care for a family member. Family caregivers assist with personal care, provide transportation, act as medical advocates, and offer emotional support for those who cannot live independently, and they do this while managing the demands of their personal lives, their jobs, and their families.

  • During the month of November you can do something to recognize, support, thank, and help a family caregiver by:
  • Offering a few hours of respite time to a family caregiver;
  • Sending a car, flowers, or a gift certificate for some kind of personal service;
  • Helping a family caregiver prepare for the holidays or prepare a holiday meal; or
  • Help a family caregiver find educational materials and support.

BIAA offers resources for family caregivers on our website, and caregivers can also call the National Brain Injury Information Center at 800-444-6443 for information on brain injury resources in their states.
