May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Stroke is classified as a non-traumatic or acquired brain injury (ABI) and is a leading cause of death among Americans. BIAA advocates year-round on behalf of all individuals with brain injuries, both ABIs and their counterpart, TBIs (traumatic brain injuries). We promote awareness efforts, lobby congressional leaders, invest in scientific research, train professionals, and provide direct outreach to individuals, families, and caregivers.
Our signature fundraising campaign, Do More, is your opportunity to personally raise funds for the variety of programs and services at BIAA.
This National Stroke Awareness Month, we are encouraging Do More participants to get moving with our Miles In May initiative. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), physical exercise is a key way to prevent stroke. We are asking fundraisers to commit to movement goals throughout the month – whether that be running, walking, biking, swimming, or anything else!
After you’ve created your fundraising page, check in regularly on social media using #MilesInMay and #StrokeMonth and tag BIAA so we can find and boost your posts. Make your movement competitive by setting a meaningful goal, such as:
- 40 miles in the month: Every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke
- 3.5 miles per week: Every 3.5 minutes someone dies of a stroke
- 90 minutes of a physical activity per week: Recommended amount of exercise per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Inspire your friends, family, co-workers, and community to participate in Do More using #MilesInMay and #StrokeMonth. Together, we can make a difference for all ABIs.
